Five years after Moonlight Shadow, Tôn Thất An is teaming up again with Malaysian director Edmund Yeo for Age of Goodbyes a film based on the Li Zi Shu‘s novel of the same name, “a trancelike, poetic meditation on intergenerational trauma, rooted in the literary tradition of Chinese-language novels” (Karen Cheung).
Shooting took place last year in Ipoh, with Chen Chih Wen as cinematographer, while post-production was done in the second half of 2025.
For the score, Tôn Thất An has reunited with his long-time musical partners, namely Edric Chang (violin), Emily Chang (cello), Keith Lee (guzheng) and Gan Guo (erhu).
The film being a multidimensional hall of mirrors with a narrative spanning five decades, the music journeys through different styles and genres, fron Baroque to experimental music, choral works, pieces for cello, 90’s club music or Chinese cha-cha.
Sound mixing took place at the mythical 3H Studio in Taipei, with Tu Tse-Kang and Tu Duu-Chih supervising.
